Students at Dalhart High School collectively nominated eight classmates as the 2009/10 candidates for Homecoming King and Queen.  The eight were selected as those students who received the greatest number of votes with each class nominating one set of seniors as their candidates.

The freshman nominated Queen candidate Kelsea Kae Weatherly and King candidate Devin Jacob Vigil.  Kelsea is the daughter of Kim Weatherly.  She was born in Amarillo in 1991.  She stated, “I enjoy going to church and hanging out with my friends.”  Kelsea attends First Baptist Church.  She also commented, “My favorite things to do are talk, listen to music and worship.”  Kelsea plans to attend college after graduation next year and also has plans to travel on orphan mission trips.  When asked about her favorite thing about herself she noted that she like her personality.

Devin is the son of Jesse and Shannon Torres and Edward Vigil.  He was born in Clayton in 1991.  His interests and hobbies include hunting, football, golf and hanging out with his friends.  Two of Devin’s cousins have been Homecoming Queens in the past, the late Christina Gomez Hammett and Kisha Gomez Hulsey.  Devin’s favorite teachers this year are Coach Young, Ms. Klafka and Ms Cunningham.  He stated, “My favorite thing to do is hang out with my friends and family.”  After graduation, Devin plans to join the Air Force and noted, “I’m going to make sure my family has a stack of Kleenex as my journey begins.”  Devin’s favorite thing about himself is his sense of humor and what he calls, “My will to strive to be the best I can be and my ability to put a smile on a sad face.”  Devin is a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

The sophomores nominated Laramie Mika Wing and Jefferson Drew “J.D.” Abla.  Laramie is the daughter of Traleia Wing and Mike Wing.  She was born in Dumas in 1991.  People in Dalhart may recall that Laramie was the reigning XIT Queen for the 72nd XIT Rodeo and Reunion.  Her hobbies include rodeo, snow skiing, going to the lake and texting.  Stormy Wing, Laramie’s older brother, is a past Homecoming King.  Her favorite teachers this year are Mrs. Sorrels, Mrs. Amaya and Mr. Hines.  After graduation, Laramie plans to attend college and rodeo and has aspirations of becoming a physical therapist.  She stated, “My favorite thing to do is go to rodeos!”  Her favorite thing about herself is her ability to make everything fun.

J.D. was born in Peru, Indiana in 1991.  He is the son of Kurtis and Dana Abla and the family attends First Baptist Church.  His mom, Dana, is a past Homecoming Queen and also his aunt.  J.D. stated, “My favorite thing to do is kick it with my friends.”  He has not yet decided what path he will follow after graduation.

Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned before Friday night’s Homecoming game held at Memorial Stadium against Childress.
