Dalhart Cruzers are revving up and waxing their automobiles for the 6th Annual Muscle Car Weekend. The fun begins Friday, May 1 at 6:00 p.m. at the Pavilion, by Lake Rita Blanca, with homemade hamburgers. Following the cookout the Cruzers will start cruzing at approximately 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, May 2, the day will kick off with the Cruzers showing off their muscle cars, antique vehicles, and newly shined automobiles at the Car Show & Shine from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Cars come from all over the country to enter and show-off their classy looks. At 1:00 p.m. the Bicycle Drag Races will start. This event is for all ages, so get your bikes out, air up the tires and get ready to race.
The Dalhart Cruzers are also planning the annual Burn Out Contest at approximately 3:00 p.m., following the car show. The Burn Out will take place on the paved road on the south side of the rodeo grounds. The winner of the Burn Out will receive $100.00 in prize money.
The Cruzer’s weekend will wrap up with a dinner to be served from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and a dance from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. at the Dalhart Elks Lodge. The Dalhart band, Blue Steel will entertain again this year and each ticket purchased for the dinner and dance will give the patron a chance to win a 1968 Ford F100, 1st place. Other prizes to be given away will be: 2nd place, $1,500; 3rd place, $1,000; 4th place, $500; 5th place, $100.
The Dalhart Cruzers formed as a result of people wanting to show off their classics and to have positive influence on the community. When the Cruzers started the Muscle Car Weekend, they held drag races at Miller Air Field. They did this a couple of years, but the liability got to be too much for the club, so they started giving away automobiles and other prizes.
The first year, Dalhart Cruzers gave away a Plymouth Duster, the second year an El Camino Super Sport, the third year a Corvette, the fourth year a T-Bucket Roadster, and the fifth year a Benelli Supernova Shotgun.
Larry Schniederjan and Larry Lucas formed Dalhart Cruzers eight years ago. They now have 80 to 100 members from the surrounding area. The annual Muscle Car Weekend is primarily held to raise money for people in the community. All of the money raised is given to people or organizations that are in need, in the community. Dalhart Cruzers also give a $1,000 scholarship each year. They have given a total of $5,000 to date in scholarships. The club tries very hard to spend all of their money for expenses locally.
The Dalhart Cruzers meet and eat the third Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge. Rick Womble, president of Dalhart Cruzers said, "The community support funds the club’s activities, and they could not do all that they do without it." Dalhart donated approximately $1,500 for the trophies for the car show this year. Local businesses are very receptive to helping Dalhart Cruzers.
