Tuesday night the Lady Wolves showed what they are capable of after an on/off performance at the Randall Tournament this past weekend. Dalhart hosted the Caprock Lady Longhorns, winners of the silver bracket this past weekend at the Cool in Boomtown Tournament at Burkburnett.

In game one Caprock got off  to a quick start taking a 6-1 lead, then Katelyn Albers began serving and after a couple of aces along with kills from Marlee Reynolds and Mallory Jeffers, the team came back to take an 8-6 lead. The teams traded points and then Dalhart went on a five point run to take a 13-7 lead, forcing Caprock to take a timeout. The Longhorns went on a three-point run that was stopped with a kill by Jeffers. A block by Abby Steele and Katelyn Albers led to another point. The team kept the pressure up on the front line, and a block by Jeffers and Reynolds caused Caprock to take its second timeout trailing 21-13. Dalhart eventually won the game, 25-14.

Game two started out tough for the Longhorns as Dalhart got consecutive kills from Reynolds and Albers along with an ace from Albers to take a 7-1 lead.  Caprock didn’t help its cause, turning the ball over twice with serving errors. An ace by Riley Dunham gave Dalhart an 11-3 lead, and Caprock called a timeout. Reynolds and Jeffers put on a blocking clinic for Caprock as they continually stopped attempts to score from their side of the court. You could see the frustration on the Caprock players who then attempted to tip the ball over the blockers for a point, but the tips were quickly picked up by the back line. Dalhart won game two, 25-11.

Game three quickly became a fun game to watch. Where Dalhart seemed to do no wrong, the opposite could be said for Caprock. The game started with the Longhorns serving into the net for Dalhart’s first point. Molly Kruse served for Dalhart, taking the Wolves to a 4-0 lead before Caprock had its second chance to serve, again into the net. Albers took up the serving responsibilities getting two quick aces followed by kills from Jeffers and Reynolds, and then another ace and another kill by Reynolds. Before Caprock knew what was happening, Dalhart led 12-1, and Caprock called a timeout. The timeout didn’t help as Jeffers and Reynolds continued to block well at the net. Steele and Albers blocked equally as well from the other side of the court. With the score 17-1, Caprock finally got the ball back and again had a service error. Wilt began serving and started off with an ace, giving Dalhart a 21-2 advantage. Caprock got the ball back trailing 21-3, got a point and then immediately served out giving the ball back to Dalhart. Sarah Cover made a quick kill at the net, giving Dalhart a 23-4 lead with Riley Dunham coming to the service line. Caprock got the ball back and earned several points before serving out again, giving the Wolves a 24-7 lead. Jordan Banks served, but Caprock was able to get the point, earning them their eighth point of the game, trailing Dalhart 24-8. The game ended on a kill by Katelyn Albers, with Dalhart taking the third, 25-8.

Probably the best play of the match came late in game three as setter Shelby Wilt made a great effort setting the ball while sitting on the floor after a tip at the net. Stretching from the sitting position, she was able to place the ball high enough for a Dalhart player to make a point.

This match showed a big improvement over the past weekend, only four serving errors and three service receiving errors. The team was strong at the net and there were several good digs by Kelly Simpson and Brynn Dunham. The team, now 6-5, will travel to Arbor Academy on Friday to play in a triangular meet against River Road and Arbor Academy. The Lady Wolves will then host San Jacinto and the Amarillo Rockets in a triangular meet on Tuesday, August 25th.

Marlee Reynolds led Dalhart with 12 kills, while Katelyn Albers had 5.  Marlee also had 6 blocks, while Katelyn had 3.  Shelby Wilt continued to lead the team in assists with 23.  The back row continues to improve defensively with Kelly Simpson adding 12 digs, while Brynn Dunham added 5.  Katelynn Albers had 7 serves for aces, and Shelby Wilt added 2 more aces for the Lady Wolves

In earlier action, the JV team defeated Caprock JV in two close games, 25-22 and 25-23.

The Freshman team took two of three from Caprock 25-20, 15-25 and 25-23.
