Several local businesses recently participated in the first annual March Madness contest held by the Dalhart Texan. Participants drew NCAA teams to win the Championship. It was anyone’s contest to win. The teams were drawn at random, and it was the luck of the draw to see what team each business ended up with. Each business started off the contest with a small ad that featured their drawn team and progressed each week as their team moved on in the tournament. As teams were eliminated, so were the participants. As the businesses progressed each week, their advertising increased in size with the final four, High Plains Auctioneers, Furniture Fashions, First National Bank of Dalhart and Hunter Agri Construction receiving a 36-inch ad the third and final week of the contest.
The winner of the first annual contest was High Plains Auctioneers. Their luck in the draw granted them the UNC Tar Heels, who were chosen as the number one pick to win the Championship, to win the NCAA Title. As this year’s winner, High Plains Auctioneers will receive one-half page of advertising donated by the Dalhart Texan.
Many of the Texas-Proud were pulling for Texas, but there was no denying the Tar Heels. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the NCAA Title in dramatic fashion. The Tar Heels set various records in the easy victory over Michigan State. The 55 points scored in the first half was the highest point total in an NCAA Championship Game. The 21-point lead at half time was the largest deficit ever in a NCAA Championship Game. Ty Lawson’s eight steals set an NCAA Championship record. UNC’s 5th NCAA Title ties them with Indiana Hoosiers for 3rd All- Time. The Tar Heels had previously beat Michigan State back in December, 98-63, on the same court where they defeated them with a final score of 89-72 over Michigan to take the title. UNC entered the tournament as the number one pick. UNC won all six games by double digits. This had not been done since Duke in 2001.
Dalhart Texan Publisher Susan Clay is very excited about the March Madness contest. Clay commented, "At first I wasn’t sure what March Madness even was. I thought it must be a shoe sale. I had heard and seen about all I could stand of doom and gloom by the main stream media and I thought we needed to have a little fun!" It was exciting to watch the tournament unfold, to check to see which participant was on top for each round. "I think that the participants this year did have fun with the contest. Now that we have laid the groundwork for the March Madness feature, I hope many more will be interested in participating next year," stated Clay.
