Title: Building on a firm foundation

Luke 6:38 “Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured in your lap…”

Antioch Baptist Church was established in September of 1958.  Two pastors served the church in those early days. In 1971, Rev. F.L. Sledge moved from Bovina, TX with his wife and nine children to become the pastor.  He has faithfully carried out this role for 38 years.  He is the longest tenured pastor in Dalhart.  His first wife, the mother of his children, died in 1991. Three of his children have also died. He remarried, and in 2008, his second wife also went to be with the Lord. Pastor Sledge has four men serving beside him in the ministry as associates; a son, a son-in-law, a grandson, and a friend.  Together, they serve a congregation of 30 members.

The congregation built a new sanctuary, and when it was completed in 2004, they tore down the old building that had originally been moved from another part of town.

Phase two of the building project is underway as the congregation launches out to build a new fellowship hall, kitchen area and restrooms.

Curtis Green, Pastor Sledge’s son-in-law, stated, “We are waiting on the trusses to arrive.  I hope to see them here in the next week or two.”  He further commented on the community of Dalhart, “We know there are black families in Dalhart who do not attend any church.  My hope is to see this new facility bring them to church.”

Rev. Sledge is asking the community to help. “We are asking the community of Dalhart to open their hearts to assist us with this new facility.  Our membership is planning a fund-raiser meal in the near future; however, we know we will need additional assistance with the construction costs. You may contact the church secretary, Sandra Green, at 806-268-0218, if you have any questions about the request. Thank you for your support of Antioch Baptist Church and God Bless.”
