The driver of a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) traveling west on U.S. 54 was sandwiched between two semi-trucks Saturday sending the driver of the SUV to the hospital rendering the two trucks inoperable.

According to Penny Loudder who is a deputy sheriff with the Hartley County Sheriff’s office, who was on the scene to direct traffic said the driver of the SUV, whose name has not been released, was traveling west when he tried to pass the first semi-truck. The driver of the SUV realized that he couldn’t pass due to U.S. 54 becoming one lane over the bridge over Rita Blanca Creek. Currently crews are putting in a new bridge over the creek and  traffic is down to one lane with a stop lights on both sides of the construction allowing one way traffic from both ways to pass during alternate times.
