Wreck east of Dalhart kills two, injures five

Two Omega Delta PhI Fraternity brothers were killed and five people were injured Friday when the 2006  Chevrolet Impala Victor Manuel Maldonado (18) was driving collided with a Freightliner semi-truck tractor towing a 2012 Vanguard semi-trailer at 8:30 a.m. six miles east of Dalhart on US 54.

Two Omega Delta PhI Fraternity brothers were killed and five people were injured Friday when the 2006  Chevrolet Impala Victor Manuel Maldonado (18) was driving collided with a Freightliner semi-truck tractor towing a 2012 Vanguard semi-trailer at 8:30 a.m. six miles east of Dalhart on US 54.

Five college students, all fraternity brothers from Northeastern Illinois University were on their way to a  conference in Tucson, Chris Rey senior trooper with Texas Highway patrol said. DPS reports state the young  men’s vehicle was traveling southwest on US 54 and the semi-truck was traveling northeast on US 54 when the  vehicles collided in the northeast bound lane. The driver (Maldonado) possibly fell asleep and crossed into the  northeast lanes of US 54, the DPS report states.
