The 2nd annual Texas Panhandle Honor Flight is scheduled for October 7-9, 2009. World War II and Korea War Veterans are invited to travel to Washington, D.C. on an all expenses paid visit to the nation’s Capitol. The three day/two night trip includes visiting the War Memorials honoring service members.
American Airlines “Flagship Liberty,” a 737 aircraft, has the honor of flying the Vets and guardian volunteers from Amarillo direct to Washington Reagan Airport, Washington, DC. Highlights for the trip will include visits and wreath presentations at each of the War Memorials including the World War II Memorial, Korea Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. A special wreath ceremony is planned to honor the casualties from the Global War on Terrorism at Arlington Cemetery. Each veteran will be given an opportunity to participate in a wreath laying ceremony.
The trip’s itinerary includes tours at the Pentagon, the nation’s Capitol and Walter Reed Hospital. Elected officials from the state of Texas are also invited to attend special dinner functions that will honor Veterans.
The Texas panhandle is home to an estimated 2,500 to 3,000 brave men and women who participated in World War II and the Korean War. America Supports You Texas is a non-profit organization that is coordinating the event. The panhandle effort will focus on WWII Veterans, Korean Veterans and those Veterans from any other war that suffer from a terminal illness.
Anyone who is or knows of a World War II or Korean War Veteran is asked to request a Veteran application for this upcoming event. Area residents are also urged to make a donation to this cause. ASYTexas’ goal is to fill the entire plane with Vets and guardians. In a recent press release the organization stated, “Please consider a generous donation as we salute our ‘Greatest Generation’ on this special once in a lifetime trip for these true heroes. With the support of each citizen, business and corporation, we can achieve this goal. It’s the right thing to do for these heroes who would not be able to afford such a trip on their own.”
