Football is king in Texas, there is no denying that. But there is also no denying Texas’ prowess in baseball, basketball and even soccer.
It may be surprising to people when soccer is included in that sentence, but what many fail to realize is that Texas has some of the best high school soccer in the nation, including the girls’ national champion in Plano West as well as a Boys’ Top 10 finisher in the Elsik Rams.
The State of Texas has three players on the U.S. Men’s National team in Jose Torres of Longview, Stuart Holden of Houston and Brek Shea of Bryan.
Knowing that, it is slightly surprising that Dalhart has gone without a soccer team or league for the better part of the decade.
That also may lead to the assumption that the city doesn’t have much interest in the game of soccer. It would be hard to prove that assumption, however, if you were anywhere the old Memorial Stadium on Saturday morning.
