Several friends and coaches were at the presentation.  Naomi and Bill McMurray were on hand to watch the new time go up.  Their daughter, Heather Mapes, was the old record holder.  The McMurrays have been following Smith for a couple of years and encouraging her to break the record that their daughter has held since 1986.  Mapes is a school teacher in the special education department at Wylie. Mapes ran a 5:44.60 in 1986 and held the title for 27 years.  Mapes was here last year for XIT and got to run with Smith in the XIT run, so she was really excited to see Sara beat her record.  David Vinson, Superintendent of Wylie, is formerly from Dalhart. Vinson is still on the board at Dalhart as a record holder in the 400 relay from 1984.
