The Chamber is proud to announce this year’s guest speaker, Ms. Marsha Sharp of Lubbock. Ms. Sharp was head coach of the Texas Tech Lady Raiders for 24 seasons, having retired at the end of the 2004-05 season.
The Annual Chamber Banquet sponsored by the Dalhart Area Chamber of Commerce is scheduled for Monday, April 20th at 6:30 p.m. The banquet will be held at the Rita Blanca Coliseum and is held each year to reflect on the accomplishments of the Chamber of Commerce and also to recognize Dalhart’s Citizen of the Year.
The Chamber is proud to announce this year’s guest speaker, Ms. Marsha Sharp of Lubbock. Ms. Sharp was head coach of the Texas Tech Lady Raiders for 24 seasons, having retired at the end of the 2004-05 season. Her career record of 572 wins and 189 losses led the Lady Raiders to eight conference championships, 10 sweet 16 appearances, four elite 8’s, and a national championship in 1993. Ms. Sharp was named National Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1994 and the Southwest Conference (SWC) Big 12 Coach of the year seven times.
In 1999, Ms. Sharp was inducted into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame. In 2000, she was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. In 2003, she was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. In 2008, she was inducted into the Texas Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame.
On a national level, Ms. Sharp was president of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association from 2001 to 2003 and is currently President of the Kay Yow / WBCA Cancer Foundation Board of Directors. She is involved locally with the YWCA serving on its Board of Directors. Additionally, she serves on the Carillon Senior Life Care Community Board of Directors, and the LISD School for Young Women Leaders Advisory Council.
At Texas Tech, Ms. Sharp is an Associate Athletics Director and oversees the Marsha Sharp Leadership Circle. She is actively involved in the United Future Leaders program that promotes civility, ethics, service, and leadership among area youth through the Center for Prevention and Resiliency. Ms. Sharp continues to promote the topics of gender equality, civility and leadership as a sought after speaker, consultant and team building expert.
Residents of Dalhart select the Citizen of the Year through a nomination process. During the annual Chamber Banquet, the Citizen of the Year is announced. Nominations for Citizen of the Year were accepted through April 6th. The banquet is a much-anticipated event in Dalhart, and many honored recipients of the award in past years attend to celebrate the new award winner.
