Hilmar Cheese Company awarded $8,000 to recipients of its seventh annual Employee and Producer Scholarship Program. Six children of Hilmar Cheese Company’s employees and two children of its milk producers were each awarded $1,000 towards their 2009/2010 college expenses.

The scholarship program was created to reflect Hilmar Cheese Company’s continued support of higher education and its commitment to two of its most valuable resources – employees and milk producers. Scholarships are awarded based on a variety of criteria, including academic performance, financial need, extracurricular activities, and future aspirations. One of this year’s employee children recipients is Serena Balenti of Hartley. Matthew Mellema of Dalhart received producer honors.

Serena Balenti, daughter of employee Tom Morris, ranks first in her class at Hartley High. She is active in FFA and track and plans to attend West Texas majoring in the medical field.

Matthew Mellema attends Dalhart High School with plans to attend Tarleton State majoring in Animal Science and return to the family dairy. He is involved in FFA and church. His family owns Full Circle Jersey.
