Dalhart FFA members have successful year in the show ring
This past spring, Dalhart FFA members had a year to remember while traveling to the major livestock shows located in Fort Worth, San Antonio, San Angelo, and Houston. The FFA members exhibited over 31 projects and had 13 projects make the sale or get premium money at these major stock shows.
Our first stop was the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo where Wyatt Banks was awarded the Breed Champion Duroc, meaning that Wyatt had the best Duroc at the Fort Worth Stock show. Wyatt worked hard all year and it paid off by being one of the very few pigs that got to sale at Fort Worth. Cole Banks also showed a pig at Fort Worth.
In the steer show at Fort Worth, Wesley Mead placed 9th with his Hereford allowing him to make the sale. Laramie Wing placed 17th in her class, but did not make the sale. Christian Olson and Sara Mead also showed steers at Fort Worth.
The next stop for the Dalhart FFA members was the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo. Dalhart FFA members really hit the jackpot at this show. Matt Mellema was awarded Reserve Grand Champion of the Commercial Steer show. This was a huge accomplishment for Matt as he has worked very hard the last few years and it finally paid off. Matt was awarded a large scholarship, a squeeze chute for processing cattle, and premium money.
Dalhart FFA members didn’t quit there they just carried the momentum into the pig barn. Laramie Wing started things off by winning 1st place with her Hamp barrow. She was also awarded the Texas Bred Class Champion in her class since her pig was bred in Texas. Karlie Batenhorst received 2nd place with her Hamp barrow. After Karlie, little Cole Banks won Reserve Champion Middle Weight Duroc, followed by big sister Jordan Banks winning 2nd place with her York barrow. Then to finish things up, Wyatt Banks won 1st place with his cross barrow. All of these exhibitors placed high enough to make the premium sale. Also showing pigs at San Antonio were Tex Wing, Kress Carson, Tanner Batenhorst, and Abbie Banks, these kids all did a good job but just didn’t have what the judges were looking for.
From the pig barn we headed to the heifer barn where the FFA members continued their success in the show ring. Colten Hicks received 1st place with his Angus heifer and brother, Dalton Hicks, also received 1st place with his Chianina heifer.
From the heifer barn, we headed to the sheep barn to finish up the San Antonio Livestock Show. Both Gavin and Galen Valdez exhibited their lambs at San Antonio, but came up a little short.
After the San Antonio Stockshow the FFA members headed to San Angelo. Dalton Hicks exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Maintainer heifer and a 2nd place Angus heifer while brother Colten exhibited his 1st place shorthorn heifer. Also, Wyatt Banks took two barrows to San Angelo for the stock show. Wyatt got both pigs pulled and got to show them but didn’t place.
After San Angelo, the FFA members loaded up for the long trip to the Houston Stock show. Matt and Mitchell Mellema, Christian Olson, and Wesley Mead all took steers to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, but nobody had any luck. Also going to the Houston Stock show was Chelsea White with her pen of commercial steers. Chelsea had the no luck, just as the steer boys had and came home empty handed.
I would like to congratulate these kids on a job well done this year. These kids have all worked very hard with their projects and their hard work paid off. Dalhart FFA would also like to wish Matt Mellema, Wesley Mead, Tanner Batenhorst, Laramie Wing, and Chelsea White good luck as they have finished up their show career and will head off for bigger and better things.
