Incumbent Gary Schniederjan has served on the DISD board for seven years. He began by stepping into an unexpired one-year term, then he was elected and reelected for the following two terms. Gary and his wife, Tammy, are owners of the GT Express located on Liberal Street.
Gary was born and raised in Amarillo and has been a Dalhart resident since the 1970’s. Tammy was originally from Kansas, but Gary states, “I met her at Bushland Independent School District, but I’ve made a Texan out of her and didn’t let her go back to Kansas!”
Gary and Tammy are the parents of Colby, who is a junior at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview. Their daughter, Callie, who will graduate from Dalhart High School this year, will attend West Texas A & M University on a basketball scholarship this fall. Noah, their youngest son, is a freshman this year at Dalhart High School.
Gary states that he is “open-minded and slow to speak,” qualities he believes have been beneficial to the school board. In the last seven years since he began as a member of the board, he states the major achievement he’s most happy about is, “Getting the bond passed and getting the new high school built.”

Candidate Doug Claborn is the owner of Claborn Heating & Air. He was raised in Dalhart and graduated from Dalhart High School in 1983. He has owned his business for 17 years. Doug and his wife, Kathy, have three children. All of their children attend school in Dalhart, except for Meagan, who has already graduated and is studying veterinary medicine in Denver.
The Claborn’s son, Logan, is a high school sophomore. He does well in school and participates in football, power lifting and tennis. Logan recently went to regional competition in Levelland in power lifting. Youngest daughter, Faith, is a fourth grade student at Dalhart Intermediate School. She is in Mr. Bennett’s class. Doug’s parents are Tom and Norma Claborn, who reside in Dalhart. Mr. Claborn is a night watchman for XIT Feeders. He has two brothers who also graduated from DHS. Shawn Claborn graduated in 1986 and Shannon Claborn graduated in 1993.
Doug’s interest in the Dalhart Independent School District began as a student, then as a parent and business owner. He commented, “I’ve never ran before, although I have thought about it for a long time now. I think our school district is doing a really good job. My kids have been through it, and I hope to make it a better place.”
Kathy Claborn is a teacher at Central United Methodist School. She obtained her teaching certificate from West Texas A & M University in 1989. She has taught for Central United Methodist for seven years. Kathy also does office work for the family business.
Kathy, Meagan, Logan and Faith all support Doug’s decision to run for the school board. Of his decision to run, Doug stated, “I’ve seen my kids and other kids get a good education here. I thought about running for a long time because I wanted to be sure I was capable before I ran.”
Doug is the current president of the Dalhart Lions Club. He stated, “The Lions Club is a civic club with a main focus on sight, like buying glasses for kids. We buy about 15 pairs each year for kids here in Dalhart.” Doug’s experience with the Lions Club has allowed him to get familiar with DISD. He noted, “It has been excellent working with the school district. I do want to be a part of it, and I hope to bring my experience as a business owner to that position.”
Of what he hopes to accomplish for the DISD board, Doug stated, “I’m pleased with how the school district fosters the students’ careers and their future career and education choices. We should always seek out ways to grow and improve. Our kids deserve it. I feel parental involvement in a child’s education and the retaining of excellent, highly-qualified teachers are paramount to a strong school system.”
