The Lady Wolves met the Estacado Lady Matadors on Monday in a makeup game after bad weather cancelled Saturday’s scheduled game.
Tori Thrash pitched the entire game for Dalhart, earning six strikeouts and giving up four walks late in the game. In the first inning, Estacado was retired in order. For Dalhart, Sadye Hammett started things out with a quick bunt, earning a spot at first base. Unfortunately, the next three batters struck out to end the inning.
In the second inning Estacado got two batters on base after being hit by the Dalhart pitcher. In between hits, Thrash was able to get one Estacado player to pop out to Melody Gonzales at third and another player struck out. Estacado ended their at bats with a ground out to Benji Romero at first. Dalhart’s batting didn’t go much better the second inning, as two batters struck out and one ground out to end the second inning with both teams scoreless.
Both teams scored in the third inning. With one runner in for Estacado and another on first, Molly Kruse showed the strength and accuracy of her arm by throwing out the base runner attempting to steal second. Courtney Dovel took the throw and made the tag for the third out.
Alix Allen started the third inning at bat for Dalhart by introducing a white pickup outside the center field fence to her homerun ball, which landed on its hood. Again, unfortunately, Dalhart could not do much more against Estacado’s pitcher.
In the fourth inning, neither team could get more than three batters up, leaving the game tied at 1
each. The Lady Wolves lost focus in the fourth with three walks and three errors, allowing Estacado to score four runs and take a 5 – 1 lead. This was followed with two more runs in the sixth, giving Estacado a 7-1 lead.
Dalhart didn’t score again until the bottom of the seventh when Tori Thrash walked and then stole second and third. A grounder by Dovel and throw to first base for the out allowed Thrash to score Dalhart’s second run. The final score was Estacado 7, Dalhart 2.
Defensively, the teamed played well with the exception of the fifth inning. Problem is that you have to make every inning count. Alix Allen did well on both sides of the game, going two for three at bat and making several good catches at short stop for outs and a throw at second for a force. Molly Kruse made several good throws to second and first base from behind the plate keeping runners at first on the base and throwing one runner out at second. The team in now 1-2 in district and will travel to Levelland on Saturday.
