The Dallam County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident near Perico on Tuesday, February 16th.   The call was dispatched at approximately 10:50 a.m. and within moments Sheriff Bruce Scott and Chief Deputy Kevin Martin were on their way to the scene.  Sheriff Scott stated, “We arrived at 11:15 a.m. to find the truck had rolled over and the driver was pinned inside.”

A driver for West Texas Ag from Dimmitt had just filled the bulk liquid trailer with liquid fertilizer at Poole Chemical.  He suffered a coughing fit that caused him to pass out, according to Sheriff Scott.  The Sheriff stated, “He had a coughing spell and passed out and then went across the road and rolled over.”  The man was unable to exit the cab of his vehicle as he had become pinned.  The cab was resting upside down and firefighters worked to extricate the driver to free him.

Because of the nature of the chemicals carried by the semi, the Dalhart Fire Department was also dispatched to handle the HAZMAT (hazardous materials) call.  The Texline Fire Department also traveled to the scene and EMS from both Dalhart and Texline.  Sheriff Scott noted, “The driver was pinned in the vehicle.  During the rollover the cab of the truck was half filled with snow.”  He added, “He lost the whole load.”  Dalhart Fire Chief Curtis Brown noted, “We handled the HAZMAT call and Texline handled the rescue.”

The accident occurred on Highway 87 North near Perico.  The driver was heading south on Highway 87 at the time of the accident.  Texline EMS transported the driver to Coon Memorial Hospital for further assessment of his injuries.  The driver was able to walk away from the semi after extrication.  Sheriff Scott commented, “He may have had a collapsed lung.”
