In what I thought was one of the roughest games I have ever seen (at least until the boys game which was much worse), the Lady Wolves used a smothering defense limiting Lubbock Cooper to 18 percent shooting, combined with a lot of trips to the free throw line to overpower Cooper 42-37.  The Lady Wolves who trailed Cooper by as much as nine points in the third period, made nine out of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter (75 percent) and outscored Cooper 16-6, to seal the victory and maintain their third place standing in district play.  Estacado, 4-5, maintained their margin behind Dalhart with a victory over Perryton, but the Lady Wolves have a 5-4 record in district with one game left, Tuesday night against Perryton, while Estacado has to play top ranked Levelland.

The incredible defensive pressure by the Lady Wolves limited Cooper to just one basket in the second half and that was a three by Bethany Boyd, the other Cooper points were free throws.  They made 12 out of 15 free throws in the second half.  The Lady Wolves who were at a big height disadvantage, because Cooper used the long arms of their 6’2” post to keep Jeanna Sybesma and the Dalhart offense in check, but the Lady Wolves out hustled the Lubbock squad and out rebounded Cooper 27-20.  The Lady Wolves also had fantastic ball movement and their unselfish play showed as they had nine assists to Coopers one.  Coach Klafka said he was really proud of the girls, and they have improved so much every game.  “This was a completely different team than the one that was a little intimidated by Cooper the first time these two teams played earlier in the season.”

Jeanna Sybesma started the scoring for Dalhart with an assist from Tiffany Schumacher to take the lead 2-0.  Mallory Jeffers scored on an inbound pass play to make the score 4-5.  Mallory passed the ball to Abbie who gave us the lead back, 6-5.  Tiffany shot a three to make the score 9-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Tiffany had an awesome driving layup as she went the length of the court to start the second quarter.  She was fouled on the layup and added one more point to make the score 12-7.  Cooper was forced to use a time out after Tiffany fronting the giant post from Cooper knocked the ball away, and Cooper tried to figure out some way to get the ball in to their big girl.   Jeanna scored on an eight-foot jumper.  Karly White added a three to make the score 17-21 at halftime.

Cooper came out strong after the half and got a nine point lead.  Mallory scored on an inbound pass to make the score 19-26.  Abbie Steele kept us in the game with an eight-foot jump shot to make the score 21-28; she scored again from eight foot out on the right baseline.  Karley White continued her long range scoring with an NBA three to make the score 26-31 at the end of the third quarter.

Karley opend the fourth quarter with another three, and suddenly, the Lady Wolves were back in the game, trailing 29-31.  Jeanna was fouled on a layup attempt and added a free throw; she was fouled again and shot 1+1 to make the score 31-32.  Abbie scored on a layup to give Dalhart the lead 33-32.  Mallory went to the free throw line and sank two shots to make the score 35-32 with 3:40 left in the game.  Brynn Dunham made a layup after a great run down court and an assist from Mallory to make the score 37-34. Cooper then took a time out with 2:45 left in the game.  Tiffany was fouled on the next trip down court and made one shot to move the score to 38-34, and now Coach Klafka called a time out with 1:35 left in the game.  Cooper then scored two points, and the Lady Wolves showed a little nerves as they lost the ball on a turnover with 1:09

left in the game.  Coach K calmed the girls down and Mallory sank another free throw to make the score 39-36.  Cooper made a free throw and it was a two point game 39-37 with 35 seconds left in the game.  Abbie Steele was fouled by Edwards, the 6’2 post from Cooper, on the next play.  Abbie sank both free throws while Edwards received her fifth foul and had to leave the game.  Cooper used their last time out with 5.2 seconds left in the game.  Dalhart forced a turnover, and Mallory was fouled.  Mallory ended her last home game as a Senior for the Lady Wolves by calmly sinking both free throws to make the final score 42-37.

Statistics:  Karley White 9 points and 3 assists; Mallory Jeffers 9 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals;  Abbie Steele 9 points, 5 rebounds; Tiffany Schumacher 7 points and 6 rebounds; Jeanna Sybesma 6 points and 8 rebounds; Brynn Dunham 2 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal.
