Wolves make Cooper walk the plank
By Rodney White
If there was ever an attempt at mutiny, it was certainly Friday night during the last home game by the Wolves. In a very fast paced game that was up and down the court, the officials struggled to keep up with the action, and there was plenty of action as both teams were very aggressive. Neither of the coaches were very happy, and both teams became very frustrated. In the end it was the Golden Wolves who kept their composure and pulled out a big victory over the Lubbock Cooper Pirates, 75-57. Believe me, the game was not as close as the score. Dalhart is now16-6 for the year and 4-4 in district play.
The Wolves started out very strong with all the seniors on the court. Chase Brorman blocked a shot. Davonte Burks grabbed the ball and raced down court to score, and the lead was 4-0. Tyler Smith was fouled on an inbound pass and went to the line to sink a free throw; he made another layup to go on top 7-0. Tyler then received a long pass from Brorman, and Tyler threw the ball back to Allen who scored for the Wolves. Davonte Burks, who was all over the court, grabbed another rebound as he jumped at least 40 inches into the air and raced down court to score again. The lead was 11-0. Jesko in-bounded the ball to Gabe McGaugh who scored on a hook shot and was fouled to add one more point. The lead was 14-6. Jacob Ploog was fouled and made a free throw to end the scoring at 15-6 after one quarter. The Wolves continued to play great in the second quarter with Harper Scofield getting a little more playing time on his injured ankle. At halftime the Wolves led 36-15.
The Wolves continued to play outstanding in the third quarter, stretching their lead after great shots from Allen, Jesko, Scofield and Smith. Thomas Allen stripped the ball from Cooper and raced down court to make the score 49-23. Chad Ogle scored on a beautiful reverse layup to end the third period with a 51-25 lead.
In the fourth quarter everything started to fall apart. Cooper started to commit a lot of hard fouls, and the Wolves let up on their intensity level a little. The quarter was a free throw shooting contest for the Wolves, especially Jacob Ploog. Thomas Allen started the quarter with two free throws to make the score 59-32. Ploog was fouled and hit a free throw to make the score 60-33. Chase Brorman scored a three from the field. Chad Ogle made a layup after a great screen from Ploog, and the score was 65-37. The Pirates got desperate and made three three-point shots to close the gap. Ploog scored again, and the score was 67-40. Ogle stole the ball and made a six-foot jump shot to make the score 72-50. Jacob Ploog ended the scoring on senior night with a basket after an assist from Allen. The final score was 75-57. The Wolves must defeat CJ Swift and the Perryton Rangers on Tuesday to maintain any chance of advancing in the playoffs.
