Boys open district play with a loss

Foul trouble early in the game spelled defeat for the Dalhart basketball team as they opened district play against the Levelland Lobos. Dalhart is now 13-3 and 0-1 in district play as they lost 49-56 in their first home game in district.
Coach Walker said this was a tough loss against a good district opponent. He also noted the team played very hard and they will rebound Tuesday against Borger on their home court.
The Wolves started out great, leading 6-3 and 9-3, before Levelland rallied to make the score 12-10. Levelland made a three for their first lead, 12-13. Chase Pope tied the game at 13 with a free throw, but the Wolves trailed 13-16 at the end of the first quarter.
Thomas Allen and Harper Scofield both got in foul trouble and saw limited action in the second quarter. This allowed Levelland to take a six-point lead at halftime, 18-24.
Thomas Allen made a basket after the half to cut the lead to 20-24. DaVonte Burks had a big rebound and threw the ball down court to Noah Jesko who made a three to make the score 24-31. Tyler Smith hit two free throws to make the score 26-33. Thomas Allen hit a 10-foot jumper to make the score 28-35, but then he picked up his fourth foul on a loose ball scramble. At the end of the third period, the score was 31-40.
The Wolves opened the fourth quarter with four offensive rebounds in a row before Tyler finally put the ball in to make the score 36-43. He was fouled on the shot, and the free throw moved Dalhart closer at 37-43. Jesko hit a three to make the score 42-47. Burks was fouled on his next layup attempt, but missed the free throws Harper finally got on the board with a layup with four minutes left in the game to make the score 44-47. Jesko hit a free throw to make it a two-point game, and the Wolves called time out with 3:46 left in the game. Thomas Allen hit a 10-foot jump shot to keep Dalhart in the game at 47-52 with 2:20 left. Harper made a strong move to the basket and scored at 49-52, but the Wolves could not get closer, and lost 49-56. As was the case last year, Omar Gonzales was a thorn in the side of the Wolves making 28 points to lead Levelland in scoring.
