Elections for new members for city council are scheduled for Saturday, May 8th.  Potential candidates will begin to file their paperwork with the city on February 6th.  Becoming a member of the Dalhart City Council provides an opportunity to stay in close touch with the actions necessary to run the city.

Persons who are 18 years of age or older, a U.S. citizen, with no felony convictions, and who are not in arrears to the city for taxes or other liability, may run.  Candidates must have lived within their ward for the preceding six-month period. The upcoming election in May will have four available council member positions, one in each ward.

Members of the Dalhart City Council are responsible for the legislative function for the city.  The council passes local ordinances, votes on appropriations, establishes policy and develops the overall vision for the city.  A wide range of skills, talents, education and daily job titles are generally seen and welcomed on the council.  The experience each member brings to the council is a valuable asset to the entire city.

Terms for city council last for two years and members meet monthly and as needed for special meetings and events.  Elected members will devote their efforts to finding solutions for city problems and endeavors.  The challenge is not for everyone, but a few selfless individuals who give of their time and talents in hope of creating a better future for residents.

In Dalhart, the Mayor presides at all city council meetings and officially represents the city at special ceremonies and events.  City council members also often attend special ceremonies and events as well.
