Officers with the Dalhart Police Department were dispatched to the 200 block of Osceola on Tuesday, October 27th at approximately 5:00 p.m. The call was in reference to a home burglary in which guns were stolen from the homeowner. According to police, “Several guns were taken in the burglary.”
Three hours later, officers were dispatched to the emergency room at Coon Memorial Hospital in response to a 16-year-old victim of a shooting. The young male victim suffered a gun shot wound to the face. Investigators with the police department stated, “We determined through communicating with the victim that the wound was accidental, and occurred when the victim was handling the weapon when it discharged.”
Also learned during the investigation was that the weapon used by the juvenile was one of the weapons stolen in the earlier home burglary. Officers noted, “Subsequently, all the weapons taken in the burglary were recovered.” Another male has been arrested in connection with the burglary. Brayden Taylor Cearley, age 17, was arrested and charged with burglary of a habitation. Bond has been set at $5,000.
Evidence obtained by police indicates that the 16-year-old shooting victim is also linked to the burglary and officers noted, “Charges are expected to be filed on the juvenile.” The current status of the shooting victim is unknown; however, his wounds were described as very serious.
Both Cearley and the 16-year-old juvenile are students in Dalhart. The investigation, which is on going, does not include any other suspects in the burglary at this time, according to police. A connection between the burglary victim and one of the suspects does exist.
No charges will be filed in connection with the shooting of the 16-year-old. Neither of the suspects have a history with the Dalhart Police Department.
