Wolves dominate the Lobos
By Rodney White
The Golden Wolves finally had a night where almost everything went their way, and the result was a resounding thumping of the Levelland Lobos, that kept the Wolves in second place in the district race. The Dalhart team won 48-0 over an outmanned Levelland team, and are now 2-1 in district play with a 5-3 overall record. The Wolves only loss was to the number 1 Borger Bulldogs, and they are now tied with Thursday nights opponent the Estacado Matadors, who blew out Cooper 54-21 Friday night.
The game was perfect from the start when the Lobos won the toss and elected to receive the ball which put the league leading defense on the field first. Zinzan Puttick kicked the ball deep and the Lobos started their first drive at the 17 yard line. The defense was incredible and after a sack by the Wolves moved the ball back to the 12 yard line, the Lobos punted from the 13. The punt was shanked thanks to great pressure from the punt block team and the punt rolled out of bounds at the Lobo 24. Devonte Burks rushed 4 yards to the 20, then he had a 15 yard carry to the 5. From there Adrian Ruiz had his first of 3 touchdowns on a 5 yard carry into the end zone, and the Wolves led 7-0 after the extra point kick by Puttick with 8:49 left in the 1st quarter.
The Wolves held the Lobos to another 3 and out on their second possession forcing a Lobo punt to their own 46 yard line. Penalties moved the ball back across the 50 to the 46, and things looked bad for the Wolves, but then on 3rd and 17 Jesko launched a 19 yard pass to Thomas who saw the yard markers and struggled to carry the tacklers the last 2 yards to pick up a first down for the Wolves. Jesko then completed a 9 yard pass to Kaleb Grant at the 20. Again the Wolves looked like they would stall, but on 3rd and 25 Jesko completed a 27 yard pass to Burks for another 1st down. Adrian Ruiz then scored his 2nd touchdown on a 3 yard carry. The extra point by Puttick was good and the Wolves led 14-0 with 1:50 left in the quarter.
Zinzan had a great kick off and the ball bounced dead at the 1 forcing the Lobos to pick the ball up, great coverage by the speedy Wolves stopped the return at the 3 yard line. Harper Scofield had a tackle for a 1 yard loss and the Wolves took a time out to end the quarter leading 14-0. The Wolves held the Lobos again and they were forced to punt once more. This time the Wolves started their drive from the Lobo 35. The Wolves had all the momentum and Burks carried the ball 11 yards to the 20. Again on another big 3rd down and 8 play, Jesko threw a 23 yard touchdown pass to Burks and after the kick by Puttick the score was 21-0. Again the Wolves held the Lobo’s to 3 and out and they punted to the Lobo 47. Devonte Burks caught the ball at the 55 and raced into the end zone, but the play was called back on an imaginary illegal block in the back. After the Penalty the Wolves took over at the 47 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage Adrian Ruiz raced around the left side 47 yards to score another touchdown but the play was called back by a clipping penalty against the Wolves. So after 2 unsuccessful touchdowns in a row the Wolves took a time out and decided to score the old fashioned way. Jesko threw an 11 yard pass to Chase Pope, then a 14 yard carry by Burks moved the ball to the 25. Adrian Ruiz then carried twice for 9 and 6 yard to the 10. Adrian then scored from 10 yards out and after the kick the Wolves led 28-0 with 5:46 left in the half.
Zinzan then kicked the ball into the end zone for a touchback and the Lobos took over at the 20 for their best starting field position of the half. But again the Wolves held and Levelland had to punt from the 21. The Wolves then started their 5th drive from the Lobo 46 yard line. Saul Barron got his first carry of the night and moved the ball 2 yards. Then Burks carried for 14 yards to the 32 yard line. Jose Villalobos rushed for 7 yards, then Burks carried the ball 20 yards to the 6. From there Burks rushed into the end zone and after Puttick’s extra point kick the Wolves led 35-0 with 2:18 left in the half..
The Lobos had to kick off to Dalhart to start the 2nd half, and a short kick was fielded by Jacob Nelson at the Dalhart 35. Burks had a 15 yard carry to move the ball to mid field. Burks then rushed 11 yards to the 39. Nick Young got the call on the next play and carried the ball 39 yards into the end zone. The extra point attempt was blocked and the Wolves led 41-0.
The Lobos got the ball at the 20 after the Dalhart kickoff. Again the Wolves forced the Lobos to punt without them making a first down. Harper Scofield then jumped up and blocked the punt from the 23, and knocked the ball into the end zone where he fell on the ball to score a touch down for the Golden Wolves. The score was now 48 – 0 with 7:13 left in the 3rd quarter. From this point on the Lobos who were playing with lots of new starters, after some team problems earlier in the week, decided not to stop the play clock. Levelland got the ball but fumled at the Lobo 17, and Kolby Ortiz recovered the fumble for Dalhart. Dalhart couldn’t move the ball and the 3rd quarter ended with Levelland trailing 48-0. John Belgira, then returned a punt to the 21 yard line. Belgira then rushed 24 yards to the Dalhart 42 yard line. Tim Lott then carried the ball 23 yards to the 30 yard line. Thomas Allen then took a knee to end the game with a rousing 48-0 victory.
The smothering Dalhart defense which was stellar held the Lobos to 1 first down, on 26 yards rushing and 8 yards passing.
