Lady Wolves claim District Championship

The Lady Wolves showed why they are ranked as the number four team in the state as they never let the pressure get to them as a great Borger team challenged them.  They fought back for a three game sweep of the Lady Bulldogs 25-11, 28-26, 26-24, to claim the district championship for the second year in a row!  Borger really made Dalhart work for the victory, as the defense was constantly out of position and really struggled to make the great plays that our passing game usually provides.  It was senior recognition night, and the senior leadership is one of the big reasons why this team never quits, and their leadership and team chemistry is so fantastic.  Seniors are Halle Stone who is the manager and so much more, Kelly Simpson, Katelyn Albers, Molly Moore, Mallory Jeffers, Marlee Reynolds, and Riley Dunham.

Marlee Reynolds had a fantastic night to start the match with kills at 2-1 and 4-3.  Abbie Steele had several sets; one to Mallory for a kill at 6-3, then Abbie had a kill at 8-3.  Katelyn Albers provided a big block at 9-3, and Benji Romero served an ace to make the score 11-3.  Mallory and Abbie had a block assist at 12-3.  Riley Dunham served an ace to make the score 17-5.  Shelby set the ball to Albers at 19, then to Marlee for kills at 20-9 and 21-9.  Brynn Dunham had an ace for 22-9.  Borger had an overpass on the next serve right to Marlee, who jumped up and slammed the ball back at them for 23-9.  The game ended on a service error by Borger at 25-11.

Game two was Borger’s to win. Albers had a kill for the first point at 1-3 then she served an ace at 2-3.  Wilt set the ball to Marlee who gave the Borger girls a facial on her next swing at 3-4.  The Lady Wolves were trailing by two when Benji Romero served an ace to narrow the lead to one, but another hitting error by Dalhart forced a timeout with the Bulldogs leading 9-13.  Brynn had an ace at 15-16, then a block by Marlee followed by an ace from Shelby and the Lady Wolves were now tied at 17.  Mallory had a kill to make the lead 20-18, and Borger took a time out.  Coach Satterfield called a timeout after the Lady Wolves trailed 21-23.  Shelby set the ball to Albers after the time out to narrow the gap to 22-23.  Borger kept it close when they served into the net at 23-24.  Shelby Wilt had a big kill to tie the game at 24, forcing one more Borger time out.  This led to another one of Dalhart’s four service errors and a lead for Borger of one point.  Shelby always sets the ball to Marlee when she needs a point, and Marlee did not let her down with a kill to tie the game at 25.  Borger had a service error, and then Shelby Wilt stepped to the line and coolly served an ace to make the final score 28-26.

You would think after that devastating loss, Borger would fold.  But that was not the case.  Katelyn Albers had a great dig to keep the ball alive then killed the ball to make the score 3-0 in game three.  Borger fought back and took the lead.  Steele set the ball to Sarah Cover for a kill at 8-9. Wilt set the ball to Cover for a kill at 9-10.  The Wolves then followed with another service error.  Mallory and Shelby had two block assists to move Dalhart back on top 12-11.  The Lady Wolves struggled a little with their defensive position, but kept the game tied at 17.  Shelby Wilt chased the ball out of bounds for a diving set to Albers for a kill at 18-19.  Another service error by Dalhart and the Lady Wolves used another time out trailing 18-20.  Shelby came out of the time out with a set to Albers for a kill at 19-20. Shelby served an ace to Borger who was called for a lift at 22-23.  Shelby tied the game with her second ace at 23.  Shelby set the ball to Marlee for the lead at 24-23, but another service error tied the game at 24.  Shelby set the ball to Mallory for the lead at 25-24, and a hitting error by Borger made the final score 26-24, Dalhart.

The Lady Wolves are now 31-9, and 9-0 in district play.  The JV girls won their match 25-19, 26-24, while the freshman girls won 25-13, 25-21. In other action, Cooper clinched a playoff spot with a three game sweep of Levelland, 26-24, 25-10, 25-15.
