Oktoberfest to offer food and fun
By Nathan French
The original “Oktoberfest” occurred in Munich, on October 18, 1810: For the commemoration of their marriage, Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen organized a great celebration including a grand horse race and meal for all attendees. The celebration of their marriage was such a success that subsequent Oktoberfests were organized. It was agreed that the Oktoberfest would be celebrated each and every year without exception. Later, the event was lengthened and the date pushed forward so that it would take place during pleasant weather. As the event evolved and grew a parade honoring the marriage of King Ludwig I and Therese of Bavaria, a took place in 1835. Since 1850, Oktoberfest has become a yearly event and has become a celebratory event worldwide.
Dalhart is not without its own celebration. The St. Anthony Catholic School hosts Dalhart’s own Oktoberfest; while our event centers more around great food and good company, rather than honoring nuptials, Oktoberfest is definitely a worthwhile event to attend. The menu celebrates great food with German Sausage, homemade sauerkraut, potatoes, green beans, bread and dessert. With the purchase of a meal ticket you are automatically entered into a drawing for two Southwest Airlines tickets to the destination of your choice.
In conjunction with this year’s Oktoberfest there is also a benefit auction fundraiser with proceeds going to St. Anthony’s Catholic School. Due to a lot of hard work and fundraising the auction has an array of merchandise. There will be both a silent and live auction with items ranging from a riding lawn mower, guns, grills, home décor, and even autographed memorabilia. Registration for the auction will take place at the door and absentee bids will be permitted. The list of items for auction is impressive with the total retail value of all items being over $50,000.
Both Oktoberfest and the Auction Fundraiser take place Sunday, October 25 at the Rita Blanca Coliseum from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Tickets and registration for the auction are available at the door.
