Red Ladies don courthouse
The Silent Witness Program started when a group of female artists, writers and faculty members at a Minnesota Arts College felt a need to speak out about the rising number of women killed by domestic violence during the summer of 1990. After brainstorming, they decided to create free-standing, life-sized, red wooden figures, each one bearing the name of a woman who once lived, worked, had neighbors, friends, family, children, whose life ended violently at the hands of a husband, ex-husband, partner or acquaintance. It has been said, “That day a movement was born.”
It has now become an international movement to which 47 states and 18 countries have exhibited life-sized, red silhouettes representing women who were killed at the hands of a husband, partner or an acquaintance.
In observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Safe Place, Inc., welcomes everyone to come out and view the Silent Witnesses that have been placed outside the Dallam County Courthouse.
