Stamp purchase lands dinner and a murder mystery
By Robin Scott
When Dalhart Post Master Traci Yanke decided to come up with an idea that would boost sales toward the end of the Post Office’s fiscal year, she did so in style. She announced to patrons that if they purchased a book of stamps, their name would get put into a drawing. The prize was dinner at Hodie’s Restaurant and an evening at La Rita Theatre for a murder mystery.
Yanke noted, “My goal was to increase our revenue at the end of our fiscal year. The idea went over so well that I may do it every four months or so.” Yanke, who became the Post Master after Pamela Dixon retired earlier this year, also noted, “I wanted to do something hat would be fun and that people would enjoy.”
The first ever “dinner and a murder mystery” drawing was held on October 1st, and Darla Bower won. Darla noted, “I was so surprised and I think it’s great that they had the drawing.” Darla and husband Lawrence, reside in Dalhart. She further noted, “I had seen that there was a drawing on the window, but I hadn’t done anything about it. Then I had to mail a package and buy stamps and the girl at the counter asked me to put my name in the drawing. A couple of days later I got a call saying that I had won. It just made my day!”
The murder mystery at La Rita Theatre that the Bower’s will attend is on October 26th. Darla picked up her prizes on Monday, October 5th and stated that she and her husband hadn’t yet decided when they would head to Hodie’s for dinner.
Several drawings in the Dalhart area have made many people very happy. Drawings and raffles are an inexpensive way to contribute to Dalhart’s economy and to the winner, more than worth the cost for the item purchased or ticket bought.
