More than 7,500 acres burned near Channing Saturday evening, in a fire that involved 11 responding agencies.

“A total of 7,526 acres at this time. We will fly over the area later this week,” Fire Marshall Curtis Brown said. The fire was started by a spark from a blown-out tire, that caused several little fires. “It was started by a vehicle that came around and had a blow out on a trailer. It didn’t stop and kept going. That’s what started it,” Hartley County Sheriff Franky Scott said. Brown said departments were paged out beginning at approximately 6:15 p.m. Saturday with reports of multiple grass fires. The smoke and location of the fires prompted the closure of local highways.
