A passion for running
By Robin Scott
Dalhart residents recently had the opportunity to meet a woman running from Boston, Massachusetts to San Diego, California and perhaps become a part of record book history. Katy Visco, who turned 24-years-old during her 9-month long trek, is the youngest woman ever to begin a cross-America run. If she decides to run back across the country, she will also become the first person in history to do so.
Katy began her journey in late March and should arrive in San Diego during the Christmas holidays. While in Dalhart, she visited with groups of students to talk about why she runs. She also ran her usual 18 miles each day and students from Dalhart had the chance to run along with her. Braving the early morning cold was a welcome price to pay for several of the area kids who couldn’t seem to get enough of the young woman they call “inspiring.”
Katy spoke about why she runs, stating, “I have loved to run since junior high. I’m passionate about it. What I discovered as I got older was that my friends, who had been passionate about different things, weren’t pursuing their passions. They left college and began working in areas that weren’t about what they love. I thought, ‘Wow, how can I tell people to follow their passions?’ I decided to run because I love to run, and it gives me the opportunity to talk to people about what they love to do.”
Katy, an extremely intensive listener, does talk to people about what they love to do, whether it’s running or riding a bike or something that is entirely unrelated to sports. She is captivated by people, not seeming to realize that she’s the one sitting in a spotlight. After she arrives in San Diego she states, “I’ll probably take a couple of months to decide what I want to do next. I know that I will speak and make personal appearances and I plan to write a book, but I may also run back to Boston!”
Seeing such a young and small person taking on such a huge endeavor has motivated many people to figure out what it is they would like to do. Katy is a very inspirational and driven young woman. On her website, www.paveyourlane.com, she states that she “Hopes to inspire people across America to follow their passions, empower individuals to connect to what gives them life and pave their own lane to pursue it, while making a positive impact on the world and she also hopes to make history, and the youngest woman to accomplish a solo run across America.”
Dalhart was just about halfway on Katy’s cross country run that raises money for Girls on the Run, a non-profit prevention program that encourages young girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. While in Dalhart, Katy demonstrated that she talks the talk and walks the walk of commitment to a passion and dream, albeit at a much faster 9-mile an hour pace! People in Dalhart will long remember Katy Visco and perhaps have the chance to say, “I met a world record holder in Dalhart!”
