Posted by: tdt -

The second major grassfire near Channing within the past week burned approximately 4,500 acres and took nearly 24 hours and multiple agencies to contain. The Dalhart Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) and the Hartley Fire Department were among those that helped contain the fire.

The fire began Sunday afternoon, March 18, when the high winds blew down 12 power poles near FM 722, causing the fire to spark. The Dalhart VFD was called out a little after 6 pm for mutual aid with the Channing Fire Department to fight the fire. According to the Dalhart VFD Facebook page, four Dalhart VFD units were dispatched. Also responding to the fire were the Hartley Fire Department, Texline Fire Department, Sedan Fire Department, Boys Ranch Fire Department, Dumas Fire Department, Hartley County Sheriff’s Office, Moore County Sheriff’s Office, DPS, AEG Petroleum, and many others. The Texas A&M Forest Service was also contacted for assistance.
