The Hartley County Sheriff’s Office announced last week that their K-9, Blitz, died from injuries that were sustained from being struck by a pickup truck on Monday February 26.

On Feb. 26 at around 8 am, Deputy Tommy Hughes, the K-9 handler for the sheriff’s office, let Blitz out to break. During that break, Blitz walked around near the trash bin in the ally to mark his territory. A cat jumped out of the trash can at that moment. Blitz, who had a very high predator drive, took off after the cat and chased the cat north down the ally. Deputy Hughes yelled a command to stop Blitz, but it was to no avail. Blitz was struck by a pickup truck while chasing the cat. Right after being struck, Blitz got up and ran away, disappearing.
