“I...am a victor, and I have been able to find my freedom and break the chains of abuse that had a hold on me for way too long,” Frank Phillips College student Kristi Orthman declared in a speech on Friday Oct. 27 during Safe Place, Inc.’s ceremony in Dalhart to commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month and honor Texas victims. Orthman, whose experience of abuse began as a child at the hands of her own mother, brought many audience members to tears as she discussed the tragedy of domestic violence and how it had affected her life.

According to Orthman, she eventually overcame the violence and abuse that had marred her early life. Pointing to her own survival and success, she rejects the label of victim for herself.
