October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Safe Place, Inc. staffers are commemorating it by setting up the red, wooden figures known as the “red ladies” on the courthouse lawns of Dallam, Moore, Hartley, and Sherman Counties. Each figure represents someone who has died because of a domestic violence incident in Texas, and the story of how that person died is attached to the figure.

“Everything suddenly becomes much more real when I read the stories of domestic violence fatalities in our own state and even our own community,” says Safe Place, Inc. Executive Director Heather Weidner. “It reminds me just how serious our job is.”
