The Joe Nisbett Fun Runs are a big part of XIT weekend, and they were even bigger in 2017, as it was the 40th anniversary of the annual event. Both a 1-mile run and a 5K were run during the event. The race is named after Joe Nisbett, who originally started the run in 1977 as the Empty Saddle Fun Run. Five members of Nisbett’s family placed in the top three in their respective divisions during the races.

A total of 31 men entered the 1-mile race. In that 1-mile run, Hartley’s Alejandro Chavez, who placed second at state last year in cross-country, won first place overall among the men with a time of 5 minutes 11 seconds, which also gave him first place in the 15-19 year old division. Bryce Likes placed second in the 15-19 division at 15 minutes 31 seconds.
