An emergency burn ban has been issued in both Dallam and Hartley Counties. The bans were issued Sunday and will last for seven days.

Judge Ronnie Gordon issued the ban for Hartley County, and Judge Wes Ritchey issued the ban in Dallam County. Dalhart Fire Chief Curtis Brown said the ban will go through Saturday. However, both the Dallam and Hartley County Commissioners are expected to consider an extension to the burn ban at their next meetings, which are scheduled for Monday, March 13.

Brown said area residents can still use a grill in town. However, all other burning is prohibited during the ban. He said the national grasslands surrounding the Dalhart area have been in a stage one fire restriction. Brown said he expected that to change to a stage 2 restriction.
