A Dalhart Junior High student was reportedly found to have an unloaded handgun in the student’s backpack
Tuesday.

According to a statement released by superintendent John Massey Tuesday afternoon, the school immediately
began a law enforcement investigation, and the student was not in possession of ammunition.

Massey’s statement reads, “Dalhart ISD District policy, as well as state law, considers the possession of a firearm on school premises by a student to be an extremely serious disciplinary infraction, as well as a criminal matter, and it is being treated as such.”
