The Dalhart Police Department is advising area residents to be wary of a scam currently circulating the area.

According to interim police chief Mike Ford, four residents received a phone call from a scammer August 26 stating their child had been kidnapped and demanding ransom money. Ford said one local victim was told their child was being held at gunpoint and a girl was put on the phone claiming to be the victim’s child.

Ford said the scammers use social media and other forms of research to try to convince you they have the child or loved one in their possession.
