Sunflowers offer producers an alternative crop in panhandle

Sunflower production has been steadily increasing across the panhandle region, with high oleic oilseed production being the most common type of seed planted. Sunflowers are also a sturdy plant, with the ability to withstand temperatures as low as 28 degrees for up two hours.

Information about sunflower production for the panhandle region was presented at a meeting in Texline
earlier this month.

Dr. Ed Bynum, Texas A&M AgriLife entomologist, presented information about controlling sunflower moth
earlier this month as part of a sunflower symposium held in Texline.
