Petal Pushers dedicate sign
By SARAH LOBLEY
On Friday, June 6, the Petal Pushers dedicated a new sign in 7th Street Park in honor of Liny Mellema, a longtime member of Petal Pushers who passed away last year. The weather was perfect, warm and sunny with a mild breeze to keep things pleasant. The dedication was well attended and the participants included all but one of Liny’s children. Mary Kay Bezner gave the address. “This is kind of an anniversary,” Bezner said, “it was about a year ago that Liny [was last out here helping us].” She talked about how inspirational Liny was. “She understood what we have here in America,” she said.
Liny and her husband Tom immigrated to America from Holland when they were in their fifties. Both had lived under Nazi occupation in WWII and scraped through. Tom had come to America twice as a part of the Young Farmers’ Exchange Program, part of the Marshall Plan, shortly after WWII. The first time he was placed somewhere in the Midwest, and the second time he ended up in Dalhart.
