Rain, sleet, snow
By SARAH LOBLEY
The Dalhart Post Office recently recognized a 35 year veteran upon his upcoming retirement. Glen Milton began his career with the USPS on January 5, 1980 at the old post office on Denver Avenue and made the move to the current post office when it was built. After Glen completed his 90-day probationary period on April 5 and first started as a letter carrier, he trailed behind Dewayne Roberts on his all walking route, which was estimated at 10 miles a day. At the end of that first exhausting day, Glen wondered, “What have I gotten myself into?”
Now 35 years later, the routes have changed to mostly curbside delivery and cluster boxes, but a few patrons still receive their mail via front door delivery. Glen has delivered every route in Dalhart at one time or another. Delivery trucks have gone from the little jeeps, which “were fun in the snow,” Glen noted, to the large roomy vehicles that are used today.
