Potato harvest underway in Panhandle

Posted by: tdt -

“It’s only the farmer who faithfully plants seeds in the spring, who reaps a harvest in autumn,” B.C. Forbes
Area potato growers began harvesting their crops this week in Dalhart, and according to Grant Monie, manager of CSS Potato Farms in Dalhart, this year’s harvest is going to be a good one.
“This (Wednesday Sept. 18) is literally the first day of harvest,” Monie said. “We planted in Dalhart in the last week of April and the first two weeks of May.”
CSS Farms plants about 3,600 acres of potatoes, they also grow wheat and corn, as Monie said, and they rotate crops on a two-year cycle of either wheat or corn after planting potatoes in an area of the farm.
“One-hundred percent of our potatoes are used to make potato chips,” Monie said. “We supply the Frito Lay Company with potatoes for their chips at their Texas production plants.”
Monie said CSS Farms also grows on 650 acres near Olton and his company harvests off the field and ships potatoes to Frito Lay from there as well. Harvest begins at the Olton farm around the 4th of July and finishes up the second week in August.
