Chelsea Owens, the 24-year-old daughter of Robert (Butch) & Christine Owens, graduated from Texas Tech University with a Master’s of Science in Human Development & Family Studies on May 8th. Her thesis was titled “Having a Sibling with Cancer During Childhood”. She researched how having a sibling ill with cancer during childhood affected the participants’ relationship with their mothers during and after the illness.
Her research results indicated that the sisters experienced change, experienced separation from their primary caregiver, were not given enough information about the illness, experienced differential treatment than their ill sibling, had salient memories, had insecure attachment relationships with their mothers after the illness and experienced detachment. Chelsea is now working at the Bair Foundation, a Christian Foster Care Agency, in Amarillo, as a Social Services Worker.
