Lott named sports editor

Posted by: tdt -

The Dalhart Texan has a new sports editor and his name is Thomas Lott.
Lott graduated from Texas Tech University in 2012 and spent the last year and half working in Katy covering the 2012 5A Division II state football champion Katy Tigers along with five other 5A schools.
“I absolutely loved the time I spent in Katy,” Lott said. “I went to Cinco Ranch in Katy from 2002-2006 and had the chance to play against Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton in football and baseball and knew I wanted to get a chance to cover sports there at the paper I grew up reading.”
Lott had the chance to see state champions in wrestling, including undefeated boys heavyweight champion Ivan De Leon, as well as regional semi-final teams from Seven Lakes high school in basketball.
Seven Lakes played in the same district as current Duke shooting guard Rasheed Sulaimon and were one game away from taking on the Harrison twins from Fort Bend Travis in their 2011-2012 campaign. The twins will be playing for Kentucky this fall.
“Covering sports in the Houston area was a great experience, but I felt that I was getting too comfortable there,” Lott said. “I knew a lot of the coaches from the time I was in high school there and I started to get a little complacent, and I needed to make a change.”
The Times also felt they needed to go in another direction and he started looking around for jobs. The Dalhart Texan was one of the first jobs he saw posting for and the first he applied for.
A couple weeks have passed since then and Lott is up in Dalhart and ready to work.
“I’m really looking forward to get started and to hit the ground running,” he said. “It was physically impossible to cover everything in the Katy area. You had six schools playing games sometimes in six different locations and one person can’t get to all of that. But here in Dalhart, I think I am going to be able to get to absolutely everything.
“That is going to be my priority here. I hope to cover every single game including the sub-varsity teams. It’s going to be a new experience and I’m looking forward to getting started.”
Over the next few weeks, Lott said he is going to spend his time settling in and getting to know the coaches. He’s going to get the Texan going in social media and plans to have every game updated live with scores and stats.
If anyone ever has any stories and just wants to give some criticism on things they think could be covered better or simply covered differently, they can e-mail Thomas at
