United States Congressman Mac Thornberry spoke to a small group of concerned citizens on Tuesday, July 2 at the First National Bank Community Room. Preceding the town hall style meeting on national concerns Thornberry stated, “People have serious concerns about the budget and debt, gun control, healthcare and national security.  They want their voices to be heard, and these conversations are one way I can listen to their concerns and they can share their ideas with me.”
Thornberry began the intimate conversation by discussing the Farm Bill, “Eighty percent of the proposed bill is food and nutrition programs.” The amount of food stamps issued by the U. S. Department of Agriculture has double in recent years, Thornberry explained. “If we stop the automatic enrollment in the food stamp program and strictly issue the entitlement on income eligibility, it would cut down on the amount of food stamps issued,” Thornberry clarified many people receive food stamps because they qualify for other entitlement programs even though their income exceeds the ceiling to qualify.
