Nick Olson, curator at the XIT Museum, celebrated his twentieth anniversary on May 2. “I remember my first day at the museum, my son Christian was born the day before and I came to Dalhart with my dad for Orville Finch’s book signing.” Olson and his wife, Jeanet, were looking for a smaller town and her parents owned a ranch here and farmed. Olsen moved his wife, infant son and three year old daughter, Samantha, to the family farm outside of Dalhart.
Olson began at the museum when the total square footage was 7500 feet. Two fundraisers and 20 years later the museum has double in size and has a warehouse with track shelving. “We’re a small museum that everybody in the community supports,” stated Olson. The oldest piece of history dates back to 1500 and the newest is a cell phone that’s only a year old, “It’s nice to show the transition from party line phones through rotary dialed phones and now cell phones,” Olson tracked the history the museum is renowned for.
