Track members compete at state

Dalhart sent three students to the state track meet in Austin over the weekend, and they represented Dalhart well.  The meet started with rain delays on Friday, but Dalhart didn’t compete until Saturday, and the weather was beautiful.  Sara Smith got the team started when she ran the 3200 at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.  Sara finished fifth in the state with a time of 11:23.49, which was a new personal best time on the track.  Sara beat her regional qualifying time by over 12 seconds so she had an amazing run against some great competition.  After the race Sara stated, “I probably ran a little fast on the first mile, my split time was 5:31 on the first mile.”
Sydney King pole vaulted at 11:30 a.m.  The vault started at nine foot six inches, and Sydney looked perfect, never missing a vault, until they passed 11 feet.  King finished in fifth place with a vault of 11 feet.  King said, “I’m thankful to be here.  My coach, Joe Garcia, did a fantastic job.”  Sara said she would be back next year to break her record.  Garcia said she tweaked her ankle a little at 11 feet and that hurt her.
