Carson & Barnes Circus arrived in Dalhart early Friday morning to begin setting up for two shows at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. that afternoon. The chill of the 40 degree weather and wind speeds gusting to approximately 31 mile per hour made setting up the huge tent tedious. Roustabouts were tying the tent off to stakes placed several feet in the ground. A small tractor was at the south end of the tent holding it taught as the sides were slowly raised.
Students from Dalhart Christian Academy were watching the tent being raised and chattering about the elephants, camels and horses. A group of third grade girls were huddled with the teacher trying to keep warm. The excitement of the circus had the children as well as the adults making plans to attend the afternoon and evening shows.
