Council hears development fund proposals

Posted by: tdt -

The Dalhart City Council heard proposals from various entities seeking a portion of the community development fund that is administered by the city. The fund is a voluntary contribution that is added onto the water bills of city residents and water customers. Various entities make requests for funding, and the money is used for the benefit of Dalhart citizens. The entities must then submit receipts from their projects to receive reimbursement from the fund.
Kristine Olsen of the Dalhart Area Chamber of Commerce and Keep Dalhart Beautiful requested funds for each of these entities. She said, weather permitting, the Chamber would sponsor a Fourth of July fireworks display. Other activities sponsored by the Chamber that were in need of funds are the Fiddler’s Contest at XIT, the downtown block party, the Halloween Carnival and Christmas decorations and lights. She also requested funding for News Channel 10’s Summer Tour. The KFDA News Channel 10 crew comes to town with all sorts of activities for residents, and they do their newscasts on location in the city. In years past, it has been held on the lawn of the Dallam County Courthouse. The event has been very successful in the past, attracting over 2,000 residents. There is discussion about possibly moving it to the watermelon area of Rita Blanca Park as it has a stage for a band and plenty of parking. The event will be held on July 22.
Keep Dalhart Beautiful also requested the same amount of funding as last year, $1,850.
Jason Swain was the spokesman for the XIT Rodeo and Reunion Association. He requested the same amount of funding as last year, most of which is spent on the parade and for portable restrooms during the XIT celebration.
