Meet The Candidates for Ward 1

Posted by: tdt -

By WARREN SLAUGHTER

Only one seat on the Dalhart City Council is contested this year, and that is in Ward 1. Incumbent Lola Barrow and challenger Johnnie Ray Bates are vying for it. Both are longtime Dalhart residents. Here is some information on each candidate to help the voter make an informed decision.

Mr. Bates has lived in and around Dalhart since 1962, but just recently moved to a home in Ward 1. Since that time, he has become aware of some of the issues that he feels need to be addressed for the safety and prosperity of its residents. If elected, Mr. Bates will attempt to generate discussion and hopefully resolution to these situations.
“Residents of Dalhart look to city employees for solutions to daily issues in our community – utilities, recreation and law enforcement,” Mr. Bates said. “Our city employees in turn look to their supervisors and leaders for direction in providing solutions to these issues. Reputable, reliable, responsible (and) accountable leaders in this community, as in any community, are essential to its growth and prosperity.

Ms. Barrow has served as Ward 1 City Councilwoman for a total of 12 years. She served eight years, from 1997 to 2005, and four years, from 2009 to 2013.
“Improving our streets and neighborhoods has been a passion of mine from day one,” Ms. Barrow said. “There have been a lot of doors knocked on and commitments signed from people who care about their neighborhoods. Thank you to all of you who have committed to the street paving projects.”
In her first eight years on the council, 70 blocks of streets were paved. In the last four years, 25 blocks have been paved, as well as Jefferson Street and 1,796 square yards at the cemetery.
