Dalhart dodges blizzard

“Missed it by that much,” as a certain spy used to say on TV. Dalhart found itself on the edge of a massive blizzard, getting only an inch of wind-driven snow. Our neighbors to the east, however, are gonna be digging out of this blizzard for a while. Dumas had a foot of snow on the ground, and Amarillo had 17”, according to snow totals reported at noon yesterday.
Blizzard warnings were posted early Sunday, extending from Lubbock, TX through Amarillo and the entire Texas panhandle, and on up into Kansas, giving residents a sufficient heads up on the storm. Sunday started as a beautiful sunny day, which finally gave way to overcast skies by 3:00 p.m. Snow began falling in Dalhart around 6:00 p.m., and an inch was on the ground before midnight.
However, the heavy snow stayed southeast of us. Instead, we had to deal with steady north winds, up to 46 mph at times, with gusts as high as 62 mph. This snow storm will end up being a mixed bag for Dalhart. Surrounding farmland missed out on much needed moisture, but we were spared the misery that comes with an all-out blizzard.
