Eight inches of snow cover drought-stricken farmland

“A strong winter storm moved out of the Desert Southwest and across the South Plains of Texas during the day on Tuesday Feb. 12,” reports the Amarillo office of the National Weather Service. “Moist air originating from the Gulf of Mexico combined with the strong lift from this system to bring heavy snow to much of the Panhandles.”
When it was all said and done, Dalhart received 8” of snow, which contained 0.26” of moisture. The heaviest snow fell along Hwy. 54 between Dalhart and Stratford, with Stratford reporting 7”.
To our north, Texline only reported 1” and Boise City half an inch. To the south, Hartley received 5”. There was no report from Channing on the NWS website.
The 0.26” of moisture is an improvement over last month which only saw 0.17” of precipitation. The 8” of snow beat out the last two Februarys, which received only a trace of snow in 2012, and 4.5” in 2011. The NWS reported that 8” set a new daily record for snow received in Dalhart on Feb. 12.
